The Book Snob

Welcome to my blog! It's all about one of my favorite things - reading.
I love to read and I love to talk about reading.

Favorite Authors and Books

Favorite book of all time: To Kill A Mockingbird ~ Harper Lee

Favorite authors who have written more than one book!:
Anita Shreve - I have loved her since The Pilot's Wife, but her books are not for everyone - a bit intense.

Jodi Picoult - Jodi writes "moral dilemma" stories that are VERY interesting.  They are almost all stories about people who have made hard and controversial decisions.  Love her books!

Rick Bragg - if you're Southern and you don't love reading Rick Bragg books you need to check your pulse.  Rick Bragg can describe Southern life and how fabulous it is better than anyone who has ever taken a pen to paper.  One of the best Southern writers ever, ever, ever!  Pick up any book by Rick Bragg and you can't go wrong.

John Grisham - not much to say here, I've always enjoyed his books.

Harlan Coben - thriller!!  Coben keeps you guessing until the very last page.

Peggy Darty (my friend!) - Peggy's "cozy mysteries" are wonderful.  Check out her trilogy When the Sandpiper Calls, When Bobbie Sang the Blues and When Zeffie Got a Clue.

Terry Blackstock - Christian mystery writer with multiple series as well as independent books.  I've never read a Blackstock book I didn't like - and I've read them all!

Pat Conroy - the other best Southern writer of all time!  Believe it or not my favorite Conroy book is My Losing Season.  It's autobiographical and centers mostly around one season he played basketball for The Citadel.  It's also about his family and his extremely abusive father.  Truly, the fact that Pat Conroy not only survived his childhood, but can string an amazing sentence together coherently is a testament to miracles.  The Water is Wide is also autobiographical and fabulous - a very controversial book when it was published.

Cassandra King - Pat Conroy's wife and a good writer, too.  Her stories are about Southern women and their lives.  Great "beach reads" for me, personally.

Mary Alice Monroe - Monroe is a native of the Low Country of South Carolina and writes about life there.  I've enjoyed getting to know that part of the country through her books.

Jerry Jenkins - Jenkins is famous for being the writer behind the Left Behind series and I can definitely recommend those.  But I really loved his novel, Riven - I thought it was a very interesting story.

Philippa Gregory - Gregory writes historical fiction about English royalty, mostly Tudors.  I've always thought they were fascinating.

Adriana Trigiani - I should have mentioned her first!  Adriana wrote the Big Stone Gap series and she's almost done with a new series that starts with Brava, Valentine.  My other favorites of her are Queen of the Big Time and Lucia, Lucia. Adriana is Italian and she writes about Italian families. Her characters often take off on adventures in Italy - it's a great way to tour that country through fiction.

Jane Austen - I'm pretty sure Austen is my favorite out of what the smart people call "the classics."  I've read all of her books.  My favorites (like most everyone else) are either Sense and Sensibility or Pride and Prejudice. The opening to P&P is truly a classic quote: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
